Whitecaps never looked back after Gressel's early goal
The Vancouver Whitecaps opened defence of their Canadian Championship title with a convincing 4-1 win over HFX Wanderers FC on Friday night at BC Place.
Midfielder Julian Gressel scored 14 minutes into the match to give the Whitecaps an early lead, and the visitors could never recover.
Vancouver added to their lead in the second half with goals from Ryan Gauld, Déiber Caicedo and Lucas Cavallini.
The Whitecaps will now advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they will face either York United FC or Forge FC.
